How to Brand a Cap: Embroidery or Print, Cap Styles and Logo Sizing
Updated: 9 hours ago

A cap is a small canvas with a seam, a curve and a stiff front panel, which is why custom cap printing has rules of its own. Get the method and the logo size right and a cap becomes the most-worn piece of branding you own.
Embroidery or print on a cap?
Two routes dominate here, and they are not interchangeable. Embroidery is the classic choice for caps, and for good reason. Stitched thread sits proud of the fabric, catches the light and will not crack or peel, which suits a logo that lives on someone's head through sun, rain and washing. It handles solid shapes and clear lettering beautifully, though very fine detail and photographic artwork are harder to reproduce in thread. Embroidery is one of the services we offer alongside our printing.
Printing is the better answer when your design is full colour, includes gradients, or carries detail that thread cannot hold. DTF in particular copes with complex artwork and has no minimum order, so a handful of caps for a small team is entirely workable.
Structured or unstructured caps
A structured cap has a stiffened front panel, so it holds its shape whether or not anyone is wearing it. That flat, firm front is the easiest surface to brand and gives the crispest result, which is why corporate and club caps are usually structured six-panel styles.
An unstructured cap, often a dad cap or a soft five-panel, sits closer to the head with a softer front. It is more relaxed and cooler in the heat, but the fabric moves more, so designs should stay simpler and slightly smaller. Tell us which style you are buying and we will adjust the artwork to suit it.
Getting the logo size right
Caps are unforgiving about scale, and this is where custom cap printing most often goes wrong. The usable front area sits between the seams and above the peak, so a logo that looks fine on a t-shirt often needs redrawing to work on a cap. Wide, horizontal marks generally translate better than tall ones.
Side panels and the area beside the back strap are useful for a secondary element: a website, a year, a sponsor. Vector artwork such as EPS or PDF is especially valuable here, because a cap logo is small and detail disappears quickly when a low-resolution file is scaled down. We do artwork prep, and you always see a digital proof first.
Corporate, club and event custom cap printing
Companies use caps for outdoor teams, site staff, trade shows and client gifts, usually with a single stitched logo. Clubs and schools use them for tours, supporters and coaching staff. Events use them as giveaways, where a printed full-colour design often makes more sense than stitching.
Caps also pair neatly with the rest of an order. Tees, hoodies, golf shirts and tote bags can be produced alongside them and delivered together. Expect a few working days from artwork approval, plus courier time, and pay by EFT with a deposit on larger runs.
